Fuzzy Math

[OK. Overkill. I swear that unless he starts doing cartwheels in the middle of Times Square this will be the last Roger Clemens related post for at least 48 hours.]

Darren Rovell at Sports Biz "did the math" on the Yankees' pro-rated 28 million dollar deal with Roger Clemens and determined that it "makes no sense" from a financial prospective. Here are a few of the mind blowing stats he came up with:
  • Clemens will earn $4.5 million per month if he starts pitching in June.
  • If Clemens makes 21 starts for the Yankees, he will be paid $853,333 per start.
  • If Clemens averages the same number of pitches per start that he did in 2006 (96), he will earn $8,888 per pitch.
  • "Clemens will cost the Yankees more than they are paying him. Why? Because they're taxed 40 percent on it due to the luxury tax and they'll have to throw those numbers in the pool. That means the total cost of Clemens to the Yankees will actually be more than $25 million ($25,088,000)."
Insanity? Insanity.
